It's an anti-war/anti-nuclear weapons song, and considering it was written in the early 80s, when the threat of nuclear war always seemed potentially imminent, it's pretty intense. There is a line "Is mother proud of little boy today?", which sounds innocent, but when you know that the name of bomb was Little Boy, it changes the whole thing. It is a poppy, catchy song, but when you know the lyrics, it feels a lot more ominous and dark. This song is titled "Enola Gay",Īnd is about the B-29 bomber that carried the first atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. It's an amazing song, these guys were sample talented, they wrote some of the best "new-wave" stuff in my opinion. It was written by vocalist/bass guitarist Andy McCluskey. I wish with this new 2021 12' vinyl on red vinyl that they would have just put a nice long extended mix of the 1980 original but NO. The track addresses the atomic bombing of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945, toward the conclusion of World War II. 'Enola Gay' IMO is one of the BEST synth pop songs ever I have the original 12' vinyl from 1980 which does not have a proper long extended mix on it. I think I heard it at a 7-11 (definitely was at a gas station) and was blown away. 'Enola Gay' is an anti-war song by the British synth-pop group Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) and the only single from the band's 1980 album Organisation.
